Join Us as a Co-Worker

The Rudolf Steiner- inspired Lukas Community serves the lifelong needs of adults with developmental challenges. We invite healthy, compassionate individuals, couples and small families to live with and help care for our residents in our beautiful, extended-family homes as well as to provide leadership and participation in our therapeutic programs. These programs include arts and crafts workshops, organic gardening, animal care, movement therapy and swimming as well as participation in a variety of cultural and recreational activities in the acclaimed Monadnock area.

Houseparents are co-workers who have taken on the responsibility for the management of a household. Essentially, they lead a house community of individuals with disabilities, support co-workers and volunteers while creating a supportive and nurturing home environment. The houseparents provide training and guidance in direct care and household duties. They are also responsible for administration of medications, state licensing requirements and household repairs and finances.

Applicants should be self-motivated and work well with others. High school diploma required, experience with developmentally disabled preferred. No history of substance abuse or prior criminal record. References required.

Volunteers are a vital part of Lukas Community life. At any given time, there may be eight to ten  individuals, usually between the ages of 18 and 28, who come to participate in the life of the community, share their vitality and learn by doing. The work is challenging and fulfilling. In fact, previous volunteers, remembering their time with us and the friendships they made, have often come back for short periods of time to visit and work.

They spend the year living and working with our adult residents who have a wide range of abilities and challenges. There is  work within the households (personal care, meal preparation, housekeeping, etc.) and work outside the home, assisting in activities such as therapeutic gardening, Eurythmy (therapeutic dance), weaving, music, fitness activities, woodworking, painting and crafts. Volunteers are guided by co-workers and houseparents.

We welcome interns who are studying social science, nursing, psychology, or a similar topic; we can help you find a university to supervise your studies. Click here for Application – Internship.
