Join Us as a Volunteer
Volunteers are a vital part of Lukas Community life. At any given time, there may be four to eight individuals, usually between the ages of 18 and 28, who come to participate in the life of the community, share their vitality and learn by doing. The work is challenging and fulfilling. In fact, previous volunteers, remembering their time with us and the friendships they made, have often come back for short periods of time to visit and work.
Volunteers usually come for one year. They spend the year living and working with our adult residents who have a wide range of abilities and challenges. There is work within the households (personal care of the residents, meal preparation, housekeeping, etc.) and work outside the home as well, assisting in therapeutic gardening, Eurythmy (therapeutic dance), weaving, music, fitness activities, painting and crafts. Volunteers are guided by co-workers and houseparents.
We also welcome interns studying social sciences, nursing, psychology, or education.

We recommend that anyone coming from outside the US to go through a volunteer agency, such as Freunde, EOS, United Planet, VIA-E-v, and SCI. They can be really helpful with travel, visas, and support.
