Senior Director of Human Resources & Operations

The Senior Director of HR & Operations is responsible for the management of the staff and financials of Lukas Community and is the key point of contact with Lukas families. This individual has the critical role of overseeing the day-to-day activities of Lukas to ensure a smooth and efficient workflow that always provides a safe and respectful environment for both residents and staff. Working alongside the Director of Compliance and Administration, this person will report to a supportive Board compromised of local professionals and interested family members.  

Key Accountabilities

  • Represent Lukas in the local community as needed.

  • Lead and oversee a team of employees comprised of House Managers and Direct Support Professionals.

  • Work to ensure that each employee feels valued and respected within the community.

  • Manage scheduling for each house to ensure appropriate coverage and time off for staff.

  • Facilitate communication and collaboration within teams and resolve any issues or with or between staff.

  • Ensure Lukas maintains a safe and respectful work environment for both residents and staff. 

  • Oversee payroll to ensure staff are paid correctly and on time.

  • In conjunction with the Director of Administration and Compliance, maintain relationships with the Lukas families and answer questions about residents.

  • Oversee programs for residents to ensure they have a full schedule of activities.

Specific Responsibilities

Human Resource Management

  • Oversee recruitment efforts for all positions, ensuring the organization attracts and retains the staff we need.

  • Maintain relationships in the local and Anthroposophical communities to ensure a pipeline of available candidates for roles at Lukas including volunteers.

  • Understand the unique nature of the staffing model at Lukas to differentiate between the needs of live-in and external employees, and staff houses accordingly.

  • Mentor and motivate employees by using a collaborative approach to work alongside the staff and residents to support house/program dynamics.

  • Manage employee relations issues, including conflict resolution, performance management, and disciplinary actions.

  • Give employees regular feedback on their performance and development.

  • In conjunction with the Board, manage employee compensation and benefit programs.

Family Relationships

  • Maintain regular communication with parents/guardians regarding matters affecting their residents.

  • Prepare and send out regular communications to families about upcoming events, scheduling, and celebrations.

Fiscal oversight and Payroll

  • Oversee the bi-weekly payroll and ensure employees are correctly submitting their hours and resolving issues promptly.

  • Work with the payroll vendor to ensure Lukas’ recordkeeping is done timely and correctly.

  • Ensure oversight of daily cash flow and prioritization of spending.

  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable (in partnership with an outside accounting firm)

  • Provide regular oversight of house budgets and spending.

Community/Resident Management

  • Get to know each of the residents and be present in the houses.

  • Develop and evaluate the effectiveness of day programs for the residents.

  • Oversee the medical needs of residents and manage a contracted Registered Nurse.

  • Oversee scheduling to ensure each house has appropriate coverage 24/7.

Qualifications 

  • Extensive experience in Human Resources & Administration, preferably in a government or non-profit organization.

  • Ability to build and collaborate with a team; strong mentoring, coaching, and listening skills.

  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail.

  • Experience building and controlling a budget and other fiscal responsibilities.

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in management or human resources

  • Experience working with people with disabilities, preferably in a residential setting.

  • Knowledge of social therapy, Anthroposophical curative education, or similar fields preferred, but not required.

  • A sense of humor.
