Our Story
The Lukas Community began with a vision: to create a home where people of all abilities could live, work, and grow together in a spirit of mutual respect and shared purpose.
Founded in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire, Lukas was inspired by the Camphill movement and the work of Rudolf Steiner, whose principles of social therapy continue to guide our way of life. From the beginning, we believed that care should not be something given to others, but something lived with others.
-
In our early days, a small group of caregivers and adults with developmental challenges came together to share meals, tend gardens, and create a home rooted in rhythm and relationship. Over time, the community grew—welcoming new residents, co-workers, and volunteers into the fold.
Today, we remain a place where daily life is rich with meaning. Our residents are involved in the full life of the home, from baking bread and splitting wood to celebrating festivals and creating art. We value the creative potential in every person, and we structure our days to nourish that potential through connection to others and to the land.
Our story is still unfolding, written in the quiet moments of care, the joy of shared work, and the steady presence of community. At Lukas, no one is left behind. Everyone belongs.
